Positive ion generators produce ozone, like the smell in the air after a spring rain, positive charged ions attract negative charged particles in the air and cause them to lose their buoyancy which in turn cleanses the air by causing them to "drop" to the ground. Constant exposure to a positive ion generator can and will cause lung damage. there are many many people who dont understand this and will argue this point, I know a man who slept under a posi ion generator for years and he had bronchitis that didnt improve until he stopped using the generator. You see what causes the damage is constantly breathing air that has a strong positive charge, the air we breath naturally has a more nuetral static charge that doesnt interfere with the function of carbon dioxide release from the lungs.
Yes they’re safe and no environmental hazards at all.
That is hard to say
Indoor air pollution is fast becoming one of the most troublesome types of pollution as we "seal up" our homes to save heat.
Some friends of mine have Ionic air purifiers and they really like them.. saying they work well for indoor air pollution, dust pollen, odors, etc… they reduce allergies, and are relatively trouble free.
However, I read an article some time ago that said that Ionic Air purifiers produce Ozone.. sometimes concentrations above regulated limits (remember we want ozone in the stratosphere to protect us but we do not want ozone at ground level because it leads to smog — this is the reason we have strict VOC limits.. because VOCs also lead to smog).
I am not sure if the concentrations of Ozone that an ionic air purifier produces are hazardous or harmful. However, the industry leader (sharper image?) has now put on a "catalytic" system to reduce ozone from these types of units so there must be something to this concern.
Air is made of positive and negative ions. Ionic generators emit negative ions causing dust particles and pollens to settle. Have been known to be beneficial to asma and allergy sufferers. Makes the air fresh.
I’ve not heard they release ozone. I know ozone can be produced from electrical sparks but I’m sure there’s no sparking going on in these units. But I must admit the last one I had my nose near there was a slightly different smell as to the first I sniffed some years ago. If there’s a pungent smell then that is ozone.
They are probably fine, but I don’t like the hum or the odor. What’s wrong with fresh air?
